About Me ..........

 

Where to start ? at the beginning I suppose !......

I've had a  love of all things food for as long as I can remember, from wanting to go to a restaurant in Southport for my 5th birthday - dressed in a red trouser suit ! to my Grandad's rice pudding  fighting over who would get the skin;

my Grandmar's velvety egg custard and Mum's adventurous cooking,

I have always been at home in the kitchen, in restaurants, hotels and travelling.

 

I spent six years in Kelsterton and Llandrillo colleges studying City & Guilds, B Tec and HND in catering and hotel management, during which time I also had part time jobs in hotels, restaurants and pubs. I then took my first full time position as assistant hotel manager in Cambridge, followed by a year in the same position in Guildford.

 

Then the light came on ....and I decided that working every hour under the sun for someone else was not for me; so in 1989 I came back to Wales and started an outside catering and cake decoration business, catering for up to 300 guests I also ran cake decorating courses from my catering premises in Wrexham Street Mold.  I had this business for ten years; and was at the same time out of the blue offered a part time lecturing position in the catering department at West Cheshire College, which I took; I taught cake decoration and sugar craft, sales and marketing, health and hygiene amongst other subjects. I also gained my Cert Ed at that time. The catering business became extremely busy so I regretfully had to give up my lecturing position. I also did occasional lectures for the Welsh Development Agency.

 

Getting itchy feet again I bought a premises in Oswestry that had been closed for a couple of years which I refurbished and opened a restaurant and wine bar; which I sold after 18 years.

Also doing the occasional outside catering event and keeping my hand in with cakes of course.

 

During that time I also became a director of a company I started with a partner, designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke kitchens, bedrooms, home offices, shop fitting etc ;

( but that's another story !... )

 

Eighteen years later I'm back in Mold. I have had a room fitted out at home to use as a cake decoration studio.

 

 So I've come full circle.........

and  have just realised I have now had approx 40 years in the catering, hospitality and cake decorating industry.

Last time I looked I was entering my first cake decorating competition in college I was 16 !!...
